About Mr. Long
Hello! My name is R.J. Long, and I serve as one of the assistant principals at Emory H. Markle Intermediate School, supervising and overseeing 6th Grade Team 2 and 7th Grade Teams 3 and 4. I have been teaching and leading in a middle school environment for the past thirteen years. Before becoming an assistant principal, I taught 7th Grade World Geography at EHMIS. Prior to becoming a Mustang, I taught 8th Grade U.S. History at Quaker Valley Middle School in Sewickley, a suburb of Pittsburgh, from 2005-2014. I enjoy running, music, international foods, and have a passion for middle level education. Please don't hesitate to contact me via email or phone with any questions you have.

Educational Background
Leadership Philosophy
Promote a Culture of Trust, Respect, and Relationships
Serving others requires the development of trust, respect, and relationships to create a positive school culture. To accomplish this, you will see me in classrooms, in the hallways, in the cafeteria, and at recess during the school day. It will be my goal to know the name and personal characteristics of every learner in our building by the time they are in eighth grade, as well as the individual personal and professional needs of our staff. I will support our learners and staff in any way humanly possible. They will know that I am personally invested in their successes, and I will help them to reflect upon and recover from their failures.
Make Decisions Based on what is Best for Students: Kids Come First
Serving young adults is our chosen vocation. Every decision that must be made at my desk will be made based on what is in the best interest of our learners. I am here to serve every person at EHMIS, but kids come first. However, decisions should be made collaboratively whenever possible. My door is always open, and I encourage everyone to maintain open dialogue with me regarding issues affecting you or your learners. I am always here to listen, talk, help, and advise in my service as assistant principal.
Model a Vision for Excellence: Walk the Walk, not Talk the Talk
Serving as one of your leaders, I choose to lead by example. My twelve years in the classroom have served me well in understanding what educators experience on a daily basis, and please know that I will never ask anything of anyone that I would not be willing to do or demonstrate myself. Day in and day out, I will work as hard as I can for everyone at EHMIS. It is often said that actions speak louder than words, and I will serve you through my actions and not merely my words.
